With Summer upon Australia it’s time to lose the socks and let your ankles breathe. Determined by formality, the perfect summer shoe will be easy to put on, sit low on your ankle and of course be stylish! Below, see the staple pairs you need in your arsenal.

Dress Loafer

Given there are four main types of loafers for formal settings being the Penny, Tassel, Belgian and Horsebit – it is easier to categorise these as ‘dress loafers’. Perfectly substituting an oxford shoe, a Penny or Tassel loafer will match well with any suiting attire.

Additionally, many gentlemen find it difficult to dress for semi-formal occasions. (Their standard business outfit is too formal, and their casual wear is not suitable). A tassel loafer paired with tailored trousers and dress shirt is a classy but relaxed look.

For me there is no doubt this is the shoe of Summer. The typical canvas material make the Espadrille the perfect shoe for beach days when paired with swim shorts and a polo.

Few realise however that the traditionally casual Espadrille can easily be dressed up and is a great option for semi-casual events and even summer weddings. A cotton polo, linen jacket and relaxed chino are the perfect companions for this shoe.

Driving Loafer

The driving loafer to me is a symbol of luxury and fun. Their origin is loosely associated with men who wanted extra grip when driving luxury roadsters. You don’t need to be driving a 1950s Jag E-Type to wear a pair of these, but use it’s origins to provide an idea of when they are most appropriate. Think Sunday lunch with friends or a weekend away at the wineries.

Sneakers have always been a staple in some shape or form of a man’s wardrobe. Traditionally sneakers have been a daggy, casual option for day time activity or sport. In recent years men have began pairing simple sneakers in fresh colours with suiting and more formal clothing. In the way the business world has been relaxing over time, sneakers are a great alternative for semi-casual events and are a simple way to dress down without sacrificing style.
