The two key points to remember when considering your shirts is fit and simplicity. A tailored fit is essential to you looking your best, your shirt should follow the shape of your body, not only fit when tucked in. The shirt style should be simple. Use the shirt to champion a bold tie or suit through contrast, steer clear of loud shirts as they will do more harm then good.
It is also important to understand the variety of differentials in each type of shirt and how each work with your body shape. For example the type of collar on your dress shirt can significantly affect your overall presentation. We will be covering this further in our next article, however if you would like some assistance please come into our showroom (Paddington, Sydney) and we can assist with ensuring you look your best.
Below I’ve run through the types of shirts you need in order to look good in every occasion.
Understated elegance is the key to showing up your peers and rivals in the corporate scene. When everyone is trying to over do it, stay restrained with a clean white shirt that will contrast perfectly with a dark suit and bold silk tie.
A striped-pattern dress shirt is a great way to add some style to your wardrobe. The vertical pattern provides a slimming appearance and is great for larger gentlemen. We tend to recommend light hues of blue, red and pink as they provide great contrast with a solid suit and tie.
Beware of wearing a tie with a check shirt, it is the least powerful suiting look and can be difficult to pull off. With this in mind a plaid shirt with an open collar is a fantastic semi-formal look. The larger the check the less formal the shirt becomes.
An obvious necessity for any established gentleman. The type of shirt will be specific to the the type of formal wear but is generally in white. For example, some tuxedos command a wingtip collar is worn.
Casual shirts are where we can be creative and have some fun. Mixing various fabrics such as linen, denim and seersucker can lead to some very stylish looks. The key point to make however is that even your casual shirts should be tailored, just because you step outside the city or business hours doesn’t mean you sacrifice fit and therefore your style.
Simple, simple, simple! A few well-fitting t-shirts in white, navy, black and earthy tones leaves you endless wardrobe options. Finding the right fit can be hard as you will need to shop around the different brands.
Most gentlemen overlook the classic polo shirt, unless on the golf course. A short-sleeve (or long-sleeve given we are heading into winter) polo is a fantastic addition to your casual wardrobe. Pair with an unstructured jacket for a semi-formal look perfect for weekend lunches or events.
