Fabric is at the core of all good tailoring. Depending on the garment, whether it’s a suit, a warm jacket or a pair of chinos, one must first identify the right fabric before considering items like colour and fit. Without the right fabric, even the most elegant of tailoring will be rendered useless. Which is why we invest so much time and attention into ensuring every Bespoke item of clothing has the right fabric for the right occasion. At the top of the list in terms of comfort and versatility sits flannel. Made up of fine woven fabric, flannel is soft to touch yet sturdy, offering insulation against the elements. Popularised by plaid shirts in recent decades, flannel can be applied to great effect for everything from jackets and coats to pants and suits.

At Bespoke, we use both English and Italian flannel that, at 280-320gsm, is lighter than most flannels and therefore an ideal weight for the relatively cooler Australian winter. In contrast to the heavier blends that can be as high as 420gsm, our flannel affords the wearer a greater sense of versatility, creating garments perfect for both indoor and outdoor wear, rather than mere outerwear designed to keep you warm. This means it’s the perfect fabric to navigate the new normal wherein we are often required to move seamlessly between formal and informal, between time in the office, coffee catch ups on the go and client meetings, whether at home or in person. Flannel is one of the few fabrics that can thrive in all of these scenarios, keeping you warm when temperatures dip, while remaining breathable if moving inside.

More than simply versatile, there’s a vintage appeal to flannel that makes it an entirely unique fabric in today’s market. Opting for a three-piece flannel suit, for example, is a bold yet relaxed look, distinct from other more traditional fabrics. As part of our made to measure service, we also encourage you to utilise different colours specific to each season. Right now, flannel in ash gray, true blue and milky cream tones is particularly inviting. Equally, making the most of textures such as Prince-of-Wales with its woven twill design will ensure you stand out from the pack in all the right ways. Available as part of our all-new Essentials offering on our e-commerce platform, we have a range of flannel pants in navy or Prince-of-Wales. With limited availability, be sure to check them out before it’s too late.
